Indian-Origin Man Charged with Murder After Fatally Stabbing Registered Sex Offender in California

Authorities have confirmed that Suresh and Brimmer had no previous connection before the incident.
Varun Suresh, a 29-year-old man of Indian origin, has been charged with murder in Fremont, California, after allegedly killing 71-year-old David Brimmer, a registered sex offender. Law enforcement officials described the attack as "targeted" and apprehended Suresh at the crime scene, where they recovered the murder weapon from his possession. Despite receiving emergency medical attention, Brimmer succumbed to multiple stab wounds, according to a report by the Independent.
Court documents released Monday revealed that Suresh admitted to police his longstanding desire to kill a sex offender. He justified his actions by stating that sex offenders "hurt children" and therefore "deserve to die."
According to investigators, Suresh utilized California's Megan's Law database to identify and locate Brimmer, who had served nine years in prison for child sexual assault in 1995. Officials verified that there was no prior relationship between Suresh and Brimmer before the fatal encounter.
On the day of the attack, Suresh armed himself with a knife and posed as a certified public accountant (CPA) going door-to-door for clients. He carried a bag, notebook, and coffee to enhance his disguise. Upon arriving at Brimmer's residence, Suresh confirmed the victim's identity, shook his hand, and allegedly stated, "I knew I had the right guy." When Brimmer attempted to escape and flag down passing vehicles without success, he fled two blocks away into a neighbor's garage and kitchen. Suresh pursued him, stabbed him in the neck while instructing him to "repent," and ultimately slit his throat as Brimmer tried to crawl away.
Police discovered screenshots of multiple profiles from California's Megan's Law website on Suresh's phone, including Brimmer's. Notably, the screenshot of Brimmer's profile was taken approximately 45 minutes before the first 911 call reporting the stabbing incident.
Following his arrest, Suresh reportedly told investigators that he targeted Brimmer specifically due to his age and vulnerability. According to CBS News, he described the killing as "honestly really fun."
Suresh also admitted that he had no intention of fleeing the scene and would have contacted authorities himself had they not arrived promptly. "I'm hoping that because (the victim is) a pedophile... like, everyone hates pedophiles... so like, it should be cool. It should be cool," he allegedly stated.
During post-arrest interviews, investigators reported that Suresh expressed no remorse for killing Brimmer, declaring he was "not sorry" and "didn't feel sad at all."
The Alameda County District Attorney's Office has charged Suresh with murder, residential burglary, and use of a deadly weapon. Officials have classified this as an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the community. Suresh remains in custody as prosecutors review the case.
This wasn't Suresh's first encounter with law enforcement. In 2021, he was arrested for making a fake bomb threat, criminal threats, and burglary after leaving a suspicious package at Hyatt Place in Fremont. This incident occurred following an unrelated police shooting at the same location the previous night. After that arrest, Suresh reportedly told police he believed the CEO of Hyatt Hotels was a pedophile, expressed a desire to kill him, and claimed he had been "hunting" the CEO for some time.
