Zelensky said that China could pressure Russia to end the war in his country.
United Nations:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the UN Security Council on Tuesday, asserting that China possesses sufficient influence to pressure Russia into ending the conflict in Ukraine, following American calls for Beijing to cease purchasing Moscow's oil supplies.
While China maintains it is not involved in the conflict, Ukraine has consistently raised concerns that Beijing provides Russia with materials potentially utilized in military operations against Ukraine, while continuing to import Russian energy resources.
"China, a powerful nation upon which Russia has become completely dependent, is represented here," Zelensky stated to the council, where China holds permanent member status.
"If China genuinely desired this war to end, it could compel Moscow to terminate the invasion. Without Chinese support, Putin's Russia stands as nothing."
"However, too frequently China maintains silence and distance rather than actively working toward peace."
Beijing firmly rejects allegations that it provides Russia with materials for military use in Ukraine, and portrays itself as a neutral mediator prepared to assist in resolving the conflict.
"Since the conflict's first day, China has maintained an objective and impartial position, calling for hostilities to cease and advocating peace negotiations toward a political resolution," stated Geng Shuang, China's deputy ambassador to the United Nations.
On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump identified China and India as "primary funders" of Russia's Ukrainian campaign through their continued purchase and utilization of Moscow's hydrocarbon resources.
"China and India serve as the primary financial supporters of the ongoing conflict by continuing to purchase Russian oil," he declared.
