A male legislator attempted to intervene and separate the fighting lawmakers, but more representatives rushed toward the podium as tensions escalated.
Mexican politicians engaged in a physical confrontation during a congressional session, with video evidence showing female lawmakers from opposing parties pushing one another and pulling hair. Footage captured inside the chamber revealed female representatives from both the right-wing National Action Party (PAN) and the governing left-leaning Morena Party exchanging physical blows, elbowing, and repeatedly shoving each other.
The altercation erupted when PAN representatives, positioned at the podium, refused to yield while members of the Morena Party attempted to forcibly remove them from the area.
The video depicts one woman grasping another lawmaker's hand, causing the second woman to rapidly withdraw her hand and strike her opponent in the stomach with her elbow. In retaliation, the first woman hit her from behind and then seized her hair, further escalating the confrontation.
A male representative tried to intervene and separate the fighting women, but additional lawmakers hurried toward the podium. Multiple women were observed pushing and grappling with each other, while others stood nearby recording the incident on their mobile phones.
The chaotic scene unfolded after opposition lawmakers from the National Action Party occupied the podium in protest of proposed legislation under discussion, according to Fox News reporting. The situation deteriorated as verbal exchanges intensified, and representatives from both political factions physically clashed across the chamber floor.
Following the incident, both parties denounced the violence while attributing blame to their opponents. PAN spokesperson Andres Atayde stated that his party had peacefully occupied the podium without physical contact, claiming that the ruling party and its allies resorted to violence in an attempt to regain control of the podium.
"We took the podium peacefully, without touching anyone, and the decision made by the majority legislative group and its allies was to try and regain control of the board through violence," he declared during a press conference.
Meanwhile, Morena spokesperson Paulo Garcia accused PAN of choosing physical confrontation over dialogue, asserting, "What worries us a lot is how the opposition is systematically resorting to violence instead of arguments, in the absence of being able to debate."
