India Condemns Pakistan at UN: Jammu Kashmir Sovereignty Affirmed Amid Indus Waters Treaty Suspension

India's Ambassador to the UN firmly rejected Pakistan's claims over Jammu and Kashmir during a Security Council debate, declaring the territories an integral part of India while explaining the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty due to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and criticizing Pakistan's internal political situation including the imprisonment of former PM Imran Khan.

India delivered a strong rebuke to Pakistan's "unwarranted reference" to Jammu and Kashmir during the United Nations Security Council Open Debate on "Leadership for Peace".

Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, firmly asserted that the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are "an integral and inalienable part of India," emphasizing that "they were, are, and will always remain so."

Addressing the statement made by Pakistan's representative, Parvathaneni highlighted Islamabad's "obsessive focus on harming India and its people."

Explaining India's decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, he described Pakistan as the "global epicentre of terror."

"India had entered into the Indus Waters Treaty, 65 years ago, in good faith, in a spirit of good will and friendship. Throughout these six and a half decades, Pakistan has violated the spirit of the Treaty by inflicting three wars and thousands of terror attacks on India," stated Parvathaneni.

He noted that in the past four decades, "Pakistan sponsored terror attacks" have claimed tens of thousands of Indian lives, referencing the recent attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir in April, which killed 26 civilians, including a foreign national.

"It is in this backdrop that India has finally announced that the Treaty will be held in abeyance until Pakistan, which is a global epicentre of terror, credibly and irrevocably ends its support for cross-border and all other forms of terrorism," India declared.

In his address, Parvathaneni also criticized Pakistan's political situation, pointing to the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, the banning of the ruling party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and the implementation of the 27th constitutional amendment granting lifetime immunity to Chief of Defence Forces, Asim Munir.

"Pakistan, of course, has a unique way of respecting the will of its people - by jailing a Prime Minister, by banning the ruling political party and by letting its armed forces engineer a constitutional coup through the 27th amendment and giving lifetime immunity to its Chief of Defence Forces," he remarked.

Parvathaneni concluded with a firm statement: "Let me be clear - India will counter Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in all its forms and manifestations with all its might."

India's strong response followed Pakistan representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmad's claims about Jammu and Kashmir being an "unresolved dispute" and criticism of India's suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.

"Pakistan seeks peace and stability in South Asia, but peace cannot be unilateral pursuit," Ahmad said, referring to Jammu and Kashmir.

"J&K remains one of the oldest unresolved disputes on the council's agenda. It requires a just settlement in accordance with the UN Charter, relevant Security Council resolutions, and the will of the Kashmiri people something India continues to violate and deny," he added.

Pakistan characterized India's suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty as a "blatant breach of international obligations."
