Nick Reiner is the second of three children born to Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.
According to Los Angeles police, the 32-year-old son of legendary Hollywood director Rob Reiner and producer Michele Singer Reiner is "responsible" for the deaths of his parents. A source familiar with the incident told CNN that Nick Reiner was seen arguing with his father at a holiday party at Conan O'Brien's home on Saturday.
Nick has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing deaths and is currently being held without bail. The couple's daughter discovered them murdered in their Brentwood home on Sunday.
Prosecutors will receive the case on Tuesday as they consider formal charges against Nick Reiner, who was taken into custody hours after the bodies were found. Police have not yet revealed any potential motive for the killings.
The Reiner family representatives have not issued a statement, and it remains unclear if Nick Reiner has legal representation to speak on his behalf.
As the middle child of Rob and Michele Singer Reiner's three children, Nick has struggled with substance abuse since his teenage years. According to Parade, he entered rehab for the first time around his 15th birthday and had completed over a dozen rehabilitation stays by 2016.
These substance abuse issues led to a complicated relationship between Nick and his father. They explored their difficult dynamic and Nick's drug struggles in a semi-autobiographical film titled "Being Charlie" released in 2016.
Nick Reiner has been open about his addiction challenges. By age 18, he had cycled through multiple treatment facilities, experiencing homelessness and relapses between programs.
In a 2016 interview with People, Nick recalled, "I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas...I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun." He explained that his homelessness resulted from choosing not to return to rehab, stating, "If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting, then I had to be homeless."
Rob Reiner was one of Hollywood's most prolific directors, with a filmography including iconic movies such as "This is Spinal Tap," "A Few Good Men," "When Harry Met Sally," and "The Princess Bride."
He first rose to fame playing Michael "Meathead" Stivic in Norman Lear's 1970s television classic "All in the Family," serving as a liberal counterpoint to Carroll O'Connor's Archie Bunker. This role earned him two Emmy Awards.
The son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, Rob married photographer Michele Singer in 1989 after meeting her during the filming of "When Harry Met Sally." In a 1989 New York Times interview, Reiner shared that the film's cinematographer, Barry Sonnenfeld, had predicted their marriage, saying, "I look over and I see this girl, and whoo! I was attracted immediately."
Together, they had three children: Jake (born 1991), Nick (born 1993), and Romy (born 1997).
Michele Singer Reiner worked as a producer on several projects including "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues," "God & Country," "Albert Brooks: Defending My Life," and "Shock and Awe," according to IMDB. Earlier in her career, she photographed the cover image for President Donald Trump's 1987 bestseller "The Art of the Deal."
Before marrying Michele, Rob Reiner was previously married to actor-director Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981 and adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner. Carl Reiner passed away in 2020 at age 98, and Marshall died in 2018.
