Walt Disney has established a groundbreaking licensing agreement allowing its cherished characters to be used in AI content creation.
United States:
Walt Disney and OpenAI have announced a landmark three-year licensing partnership that will enable users to create short AI-generated videos featuring Disney's iconic characters.
This unprecedented deal represents the first instance of a major entertainment conglomerate embracing generative AI at such a significant scale, allowing its carefully guarded intellectual property—ranging from Mickey Mouse to Marvel superheroes and Star Wars characters like Darth Vader—to be used in AI-generated content.
The partnership signals a remarkable shift for an industry that has predominantly been challenging AI companies through legal action.
Disney and other creative industry leaders have been filing lawsuits against AI companies such as OpenAI, Perplexity, and Anthropic, alleging unauthorized use of their content to train AI systems.
The entertainment giant maintained its legal stance on Wednesday by sending a cease-and-desist letter to Google, accusing the search engine company of illegally utilizing Disney's intellectual property to train its AI models.
For OpenAI, this partnership emerges amid growing concerns about its business sustainability, with expenses increasing substantially faster than revenue—despite approaching one billion users globally.
Under the terms of the agreement, fans will be able to create and share AI-generated content featuring more than 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars franchises using OpenAI's Sora video generation platform and ChatGPT.
Sora, launched in late September, aspires to become a TikTok-like social network exclusively featuring AI-generated videos.
Since its inception, numerous videos have included characters directly inspired by existing cartoons and video games, from South Park to Pokémon.
Following concerns from license holders, CEO Sam Altman promised that OpenAI would provide rights holders with greater control to prevent unauthorized AI reproductions.
The partnership includes a substantial $1 billion equity investment by Disney in OpenAI, along with warrants for acquiring additional shares in the ChatGPT developer.
Disney's stock value increased by over 2% on Thursday following the announcement.
Disney CEO Robert Iger stated that the collaboration would "thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling."
Characters available for fan creations will include Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Elsa from Frozen, Marvel heroes like Iron Man and Captain America, as well as Star Wars icons such as Darth Vader and Yoda.
The agreement specifically excludes talent likenesses and voices from actors due to significant concerns in Hollywood regarding AI's impact.
"This does not in any way represent a threat to the creators at all—in fact the opposite. I think it honors them and respects them, in part because there's a license fee associated with it," Iger explained to CNBC.
SAG-AFTRA, Hollywood's prominent actors union, announced it would "closely monitor" the implementation of the deal, while the Writers Guild of America stated its intention to meet with Disney to examine the terms, emphasizing that OpenAI had misappropriated "vast libraries" of studio content to train its technology.
In a joint interview with Altman on CNBC, Iger emphasized that the deal only permits videos of 30 seconds or less and that the technology would not be utilized for longer-format productions.
Beyond licensing arrangements, Disney will implement OpenAI's technology to develop new products and experiences for Disney+, their streaming platform.
"Disney is the global gold standard for storytelling," Altman remarked. "This agreement shows how AI companies and creative leaders can work together responsibly."
Both organizations underscored their dedication to responsible AI utilization, with OpenAI committing to age-appropriate policies and controls to prevent the generation of illegal or harmful content.
In Disney's complaint against Google, OpenAI's primary competitor in the AI sector, the entertainment company accuses Google of copyright infringement on a massive scale by copying extensive content without authorization to train and develop AI models and services.
"We've been aggressive at protecting our IP, and we've gone after other companies that have not valued it, and this is another example of us doing just that," Iger stated to CNBC.
