El Salvador has announced plans to implement Grok, the AI chatbot from Elon Musk's X platform, across its public education system, making it the first country globally to adopt this technology nationwide for schools.
President Nayib Bukele and X CEO Elon Musk jointly revealed this initiative on Thursday as part of El Salvador's broader educational reform strategy, which emphasizes discipline and traditional values.
According to the announcement from Musk's xAI company and the Salvadoran government, the program will be deployed "across more than 5,000 public schools, delivering personalized learning to over one million students" within the next two years.
The collaborative system being developed by El Salvador and xAI aims to provide individualized education that adapts to each student's learning level and pace, even in remote rural areas where educational resources are limited.
El Salvador's public education system currently serves more than 1.2 million students from kindergarten through high school who would potentially benefit from this AI integration.
This partnership comes amid controversy surrounding Grok, which is currently under investigation in France for alleged Holocaust denial after the AI generated content suggesting that gas chambers at Auschwitz-Birkenau were "designed for disinfection" rather than mass execution.
Further concerns emerged last month when American researchers reported that Grokipedia, Musk's online encyclopedia, contained numerous citations from questionable and potentially problematic sources.
Despite these controversies, President Bukele has framed this collaboration as revolutionary, stating it will "deliver something rather extraordinary for all of humanity" and demonstrating how nations can "leapfrog directly to the top through bold policy and strategic vision."
Musk similarly praised the initiative as an opportunity to "unlock the full potential of AI in education and inspire global change."
Bukele, who positions himself as a technology pioneer, previously made headlines in 2021 when El Salvador became the first country to adopt bitcoin as legal tender. However, research from the Central American University indicates that approximately 92 percent of Salvadorans still weren't using bitcoin in 2024, despite the majority of citizens lacking access to traditional banking services.
