Extensive import taxes have resulted in nearly $1,200 additional costs for the average American household since Donald Trump's return to the White House, according to an analysis by Democrats on Congress' Joint Economic Committee.
The report released Thursday utilized Treasury Department revenue figures and Goldman Sachs estimates to calculate that American consumers have shouldered approximately $159 billion in tariff costs - equivalent to $1,198 per household - between February and November.
Senator Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, the leading Democrat on the economic committee, stated: "This report demonstrates that Trump's tariffs have only succeeded in driving prices higher for families. During a time when bipartisan cooperation should focus on reducing costs, the president's tax on American families is simply making everything more expensive."
During his second term, Trump has abandoned decades of American free trade policy by implementing double-digit tariffs on imports from almost every nation globally. Yale University's Budget Lab reports that the average U.S. tariff has increased dramatically from 2.4% at the start of the year to 16.8% - the highest level since 1935.
The president contends that these import taxes will shield U.S. industries from unfair foreign competition, encourage domestic manufacturing, and generate revenue for the Treasury.
White House Spokesman Kush Desai defended the policy: "President Trump's tariffs have actually secured trillions in investments to make and hire in America as well as historic trade deals that finally level the playing field for American workers and industries. Democrats spent decades complaining about lopsided trade deals undermining the American working class, and now they're complaining about the one president who has done something about it."
These tariffs are paid initially by importers who typically attempt to transfer the higher costs to consumers.
Democrats performed well in recent elections in Virginia, New Jersey, and other states largely because voters attribute high living costs to Trump and Republicans, similar to how they blamed Trump's predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden, for the same issue a year earlier.
Economist Kimberly Clausing from UCLA School of Law and the Peterson Institute for International Economics recently testified to a House subcommittee that Trump's tariffs represent "the largest tax increase on American consumers in a generation, lowering standards of living for all Americans." Clausing, who served as a Treasury Department tax official in the Biden administration, has estimated that Trump's import taxes "amount to an annual tax increase of about $1,700 for an average household."
