Norway:
During Wednesday's Nobel Peace Prize ceremony honoring Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, the committee chairman made a direct appeal to President Nicolas Maduro. "Mr Maduro, accept the election results and step down," declared Jorgen Watne Frydnes in his address.
Following a burst of applause from attendees, Frydnes continued, "Lay the foundation for a peaceful transition to democracy. Because that is the will of the Venezuelan people."
The ceremony in Oslo proceeded without Machado herself, who currently lives in hiding due to political persecution. Her daughter attended in her place, accepting the prestigious Peace Prize on behalf of her mother.
