The Beijing court has mandated Malaysia Airlines to compensate families of eight MH370 passengers with 2.9 million yuan ($410,000) each following the mysterious disappearance of the aircraft over a decade ago.
This compensation, approximately Rs 4 crore per family, covers death benefits, funeral costs, and damages for emotional suffering, according to the court statement released on Monday.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the passengers' fate, they have been legally declared deceased.
The ill-fated flight carried 239 individuals including passengers and crew when it vanished en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in 2014. Years of extensive searches have failed to determine the cause of the disappearance or the location of those aboard. The majority of passengers were Chinese nationals, whose families continue their quest for answers.
According to the court, 23 additional cases remain unresolved, while 47 other families have negotiated settlements with the airline and withdrawn their legal claims.
Last week, Malaysian authorities announced plans to initiate a new search operation for the missing aircraft beginning December 30.
