European Union Should Be Abolished: Elon Musk After $140 Million Fine On X

Elon Musk expressed strong opposition to the European Union on Saturday following a substantial fine imposed on his social media platform X, declaring to his 230 million followers that the EU "should be abolished."

The tech billionaire's platform received a €120 million ($140 million) penalty on Friday after a significant investigation into alleged violations of the EU's digital regulations. This probe was widely viewed as a critical test of the EU's determination to regulate major technology companies.

The Trump administration quickly criticized the financial penalty. Previously, Trump and Musk had collaborated on controversial initiatives to reduce federal employment and expenditures, though their relationship later deteriorated.

Responding to the fine, Musk posted on X: "The EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that governments can better represent their people."

When another user reshared his statement, Musk confirmed, "I mean it. Not kidding."

In a subsequent post, he clarified his position: "I love Europe, but not the bureaucratic monster that is the EU."

This penalty marks the European Commission's first enforcement action under its Digital Services Act (DSA) regarding content regulations.

According to the Commission, X violated the DSA's transparency requirements in multiple ways. These infractions included misleading design of the platform's "blue checkmark" verification system and failing to provide researchers with necessary access to public data.

The Commission also determined that X had not maintained sufficient transparency regarding its advertising practices.
