A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck a remote region near the Alaska-Canada border on Saturday. Officials confirmed no tsunami warning was issued, and there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred approximately 230 miles (370 kilometers) northwest of Juneau, Alaska, and 155 miles (250 kilometers) west of Whitehorse, Yukon.
In Whitehorse, Sgt. Calista MacLeod of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported that their detachment received two 911 calls regarding the earthquake.
"The earthquake was definitely felt," MacLeod stated. "Many people are discussing their experiences on social media platforms."
Alison Bird, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada, explained that the affected area of Yukon is predominantly mountainous with sparse population.
"Most reports indicate items falling from shelves and walls," Bird noted. "We haven't received any reports of structural damage thus far."
Bird identified Haines Junction as the Canadian community closest to the epicenter, approximately 80 miles (130 kilometers) away. According to the Yukon Bureau of Statistics, Haines Junction had a population of 1,018 in 2022.
The earthquake also occurred about 56 miles (91 kilometers) from Yakutat, Alaska, which has 662 residents according to the USGS.
The seismic event struck at a depth of approximately 6 miles (10 kilometers) and was followed by several smaller aftershocks.
