Pope Leo XIV, who assumed the pontificate following Pope Francis' death, delivered a powerful message to newly appointed ambassadors at the Holy See on Saturday.
Speaking to 13 diplomats, Pope Leo XIV firmly declared that the Vatican would not remain a "silent bystander" when confronted with human rights violations occurring globally.
This statement represents one of the most revealing insights into the philosophy guiding the American pontiff since his election as leader of the worldwide Catholic community in May after Pope Francis passed away.
"I wish to reaffirm that the Holy See will not be a silent bystander to the grave disparities, injustices and fundamental human rights violations in our global community, which is increasingly more fractured and conflict-prone," the Pope emphasized during his address.
The Holy See functions as the Church's governing body under papal leadership, with the Pope exercising spiritual authority over approximately 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide.
Pope Leo explained that Vatican diplomacy is "consistently directed toward serving the good of humanity, especially by appealing to consciences and by remaining attentive to the voices of those who are poor, in vulnerable situations or pushed to the margins of society."
In focusing on inequality issues, Leo continues the legacy established by his predecessor Francis, who was known for advocating for migrants' rights and other vulnerable populations throughout his pontificate.
Having spent nearly two decades as a missionary in Peru, Pope Leo has been vocal about migrant treatment in the United States under President Donald Trump's administration, describing it as "extremely disrespectful" last month.
The newly accredited ambassadors welcomed with an audience at the Vatican represented Uzbekistan, Moldova, Bahrain, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Liberia, Thailand, Lesotho, South Africa, Fiji, Micronesia, Latvia and Finland.
