Donald Trump Makes History as First Recipient of FIFA Peace Prize: Understanding the New Award

The FIFA Peace Prize has been established to recognize individuals who make significant contributions to global unity and harmony.

US President Donald Trump was honored as the inaugural recipient of FIFA's newly established peace prize during the 2026 World Cup draw ceremony held in Washington, DC on Friday, December 5.

According to AP reports, Trump, who had previously expressed aspirations to win the Nobel Peace Prize, was widely anticipated to receive FIFA's first-ever peace accolade.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who maintains close relations with Trump, had previously suggested that Trump deserved Nobel recognition for his efforts in negotiating a Gaza ceasefire.

The "FIFA Peace Prize - Football Unites the World" was launched in November by the global football governing body. This award aims to acknowledge individuals who have undertaken "exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace" that contribute to uniting people across the world.

This annual award recognizes those whose "unwavering commitment and special actions" have promoted peace and fostered cross-border unity among people.

Gianni Infantino, FIFA President, stated: "In an increasingly unsettled and divided world, it's fundamental to recognize the outstanding contribution of those who work hard to end conflicts and bring people together in a spirit of peace."

He further explained, "Football stands for peace, and on behalf of the entire global football community, the FIFA Peace Prize - Football Unites the World will recognize the enormous efforts of those individuals who unite people, bringing hope for future generations."

CNN reported that the selection criteria and process for determining the award winner have not been clearly defined.

During the award presentation, Infantino presented Trump with what he described as a "beautiful medal for you that you can wear everywhere you want to go," according to AP. Trump immediately placed the medal around his neck.

"This is truly one of the great honours of my life," Trump declared in his acceptance speech, also acknowledging First Lady Melania Trump, as reported by CNN.

AP noted that the certificate presented to Trump commends the US president for his efforts to "promote peace and unity around the world." Infantino also presented him with a gold trophy bearing his name and depicting hands lifting the globe.
