Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who made history as the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station, declared on Saturday that India is making rapid advancements in science and technology. He emphasized that the nation's self-reliance in these domains is something every citizen should take pride in.
During his session at the four-day India International Science Festival in Panchkula, Shubhanshu Shukla engaged with students and science enthusiasts, encouraging them to pursue careers in science and space research with dedication and determination.
He stressed that young people bear the responsibility of fulfilling the vision of a developed India by 2047, stating that national progress depends on youth advancement.
Shukla revealed to students that his journey to space began in 2018 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced from the Red Fort that an Indian would soon venture into space. This declaration inspired him to direct his efforts consistently toward achieving that goal.
He advised students that regardless of personal circumstances, persistence is key to success, as achievements follow continuous effort.
When asked if becoming an astronaut requires joining the Air Force, Shukla mentioned that a new framework is being developed that would allow individuals from various professional backgrounds to pursue careers as astronauts.
Acknowledging Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, India's first astronaut, as his inspiration and source of courage, Shukla expressed confidence that many more Indians would journey into space in the coming years.
While sharing experiences from his space mission, the IAF Group Captain described the view of India from space as absolutely breath-taking.
He explained that during his journey, he conducted several scientific experiments and gathered essential information for the Gaganyaan mission, which will mark a significant milestone in India's human spaceflight program.
Speaking to reporters later, Shukla expressed his enjoyment in interacting with children at the science festival.
"This festival serves as an excellent platform for celebrating science. To achieve our vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, we must celebrate science and generate excitement among children. Today's children have unprecedented opportunities. As a nation, we have made it possible for them to consider becoming an astronaut as a viable career option," he stated.
Shukla mentioned his conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi after returning from the mission.
"The Prime Minister emphasized the need for a pool of 40-50 astronauts and a thriving ecosystem for human space missions. Work is progressing in this direction, and I believe we will achieve this goal. Obviously, it's a challenging task that will require time to accomplish," he explained in response to a question.
Shubhanshu Shukla participated in the Axiom-4 mission as the first Indian to visit the International Space Station. He returned to India from the United States on August 17, 2025, after completing the 18-day mission.
