On Friday, a Florida federal judge granted permission for the Justice Department to disclose grand jury transcripts from the sex trafficking case against Jeffrey Epstein. These documents could potentially reveal information about the deceased financier's connections to influential individuals, including President Donald Trump.
The Justice Department's request to US District Judge Rodney Smith for unsealing these records followed the Republican-controlled Congress passing legislation requiring the Attorney General to release all unclassified files connected to investigations of Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a prison sentence for sex trafficking.
President Trump, who has stated he terminated his friendship with Epstein well before the financier's 2019 arrest, initially opposed releasing these files. However, he changed his position shortly before the congressional vote on the bill, which he subsequently signed into law on November 19.
These files have attracted significant interest from both Trump's political adversaries and his supporters, with many calling for greater transparency in the case.
A substantial portion of Trump voters believe his administration concealed Epstein's connections to powerful figures and withheld details about his death, which was officially ruled a suicide, at a Manhattan detention facility in 2019 while facing federal sex trafficking charges.
The Epstein scandal has continued to challenge Trump's presidency for months, partly because he previously amplified conspiracy theories about Epstein to his supporters before winning reelection in 2024.
More recently, Trump has shifted his narrative, characterizing the Epstein files as a Democratic fabrication designed to divert attention from his administration's achievements.
