Venezuela's National Assembly has postponed an extraordinary session that was scheduled to discuss the formation of a commission to investigate lethal operations conducted by the US administration. These operations targeted vessels allegedly involved in drug trafficking activities near Venezuelan coastal waters and in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
According to the Assembly's press office, the session has been rescheduled to Tuesday, which is their regular debate day. No specific reason was provided for this postponement.
Since September, US military forces have conducted at least 21 strikes on boats suspected of drug trafficking in both the Caribbean and Pacific regions. These operations have reportedly resulted in at least 83 fatalities, coinciding with an increasing US military presence in the area.
Two sources with knowledge of the situation revealed on Monday that President Donald Trump was planning to meet with his senior advisors to discuss Venezuela. This follows Trump's confirmation that he had engaged in direct communication with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Jorge Rodriguez, who serves as the National Assembly President and Maduro's chief negotiator in discussions with Washington, had initially announced Monday's session after meeting with family members of those who lost their lives in these attacks. Rodriguez stated that the initiative was intended to provide protection for the affected families.
Rodriguez further indicated that the investigation would examine claims made in a Washington Post article, which alleged that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had ordered the elimination of all individuals aboard a vessel during an operation conducted in September.
