Apple announced on Monday the appointment of experienced researcher Amar Subramanya as their new vice president of AI, taking over from John Giannandrea.
In comparison to competitors like Samsung Electronics who have rapidly integrated AI features into their devices, Apple has been trailing behind in the artificial intelligence race, demonstrating a slower approach to implementing AI capabilities across its product lineup.
In his new role, Subramanya will oversee crucial domains including Apple Foundation Models and ML research, reporting directly to software chief Craig Federighi.
Subramanya joins Apple from Microsoft, where he most recently held the position of corporate vice president of AI. His extensive background includes a 16-year tenure at Google, during which he served in various capacities, including head of engineering for the Gemini assistant.
Giannandrea will remain with Apple as an adviser until his planned retirement in spring next year.
Earlier this year, Apple revealed that enhancements to its voice assistant Siri powered by artificial intelligence would be delayed until 2026.
Reports have emerged suggesting Apple CEO Tim Cook has lost confidence in AI head Giannandrea's ability to effectively deliver on product development initiatives.
