Surat:
Two Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) students at a university in Gujarat's Surat were caught using their smartwatches to access an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool for cheating during semester examinations, university officials confirmed on Friday.
The incident occurred at Veer Narmad South Gujarat University on Wednesday, marking what is believed to be the first documented case in the state where students utilized AI technology and advanced gadgets for academic dishonesty.
University Vice-Chancellor Kishorsinh Chavda explained, "An exam supervisor noticed suspicious behavior from two students—a male and female—who appeared to be reading information from their wrist watches. This alerted the supervisor to investigate further."
Upon inspection, authorities discovered both students were receiving real-time answers through an AI application installed on their smartwatches. As a consequence, the university imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each student for violating examination protocols.
Following this incident, the university has implemented stricter guidelines prohibiting students from bringing any electronic or internet-capable communication devices into examination halls. While mobile phones were already banned, the new restrictions extend to smart watches, wireless earbuds, electronic pens, and smart rings with Wi-Fi connectivity.
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized these measures are necessary to maintain academic integrity as technology continues to evolve, presenting new challenges for educational institutions.
