The Indian economy registered a six-quarter high growth of 8.2 per cent in July-September, with factories increasing production in anticipation of consumption growth following GST rate reductions, according to official government data.
The GDP growth in the second quarter surpassed both the 7.8 per cent recorded in the previous three months and the 5.6 per cent from the same period last year.
Manufacturing, which constitutes 14 per cent of India's Gross Domestic Product, expanded by 9.1 per cent in Q2, a significant improvement from the 2.2 per cent growth seen in the same quarter of the previous financial year.
Data released today showed India's nominal GDP grew at a rate of 8.7 per cent during the September quarter.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi attributed the impressive GDP figures to "pro-growth policies and reforms".
"The 8.2% GDP growth in Q2 of 2025-26 is very encouraging. It reflects the impact of our pro-growth policies and reforms. It also reflects the hard work and enterprise of our people. Our government will continue to advance reforms and strengthen Ease of Living for every citizen," PM Modi shared on X.
The Economic Survey document for 2024-25, presented on January 31 this year, emphasized that achieving the vision of 'Viksit Bharat' (developed India) by 2047 would require maintaining an average growth rate of approximately 8 per cent at constant prices for one or two decades.
India has made remarkable progress in economic growth rankings. The country has advanced from being the 11th largest economy in 2013-14 to becoming the fourth-largest economy currently. Over the past decade, India has surpassed numerous countries in economic size and now needs to focus on improving per capita income.
According to official statistics, the economy expanded by 8.7 per cent in 2021-22 and 7.2 percent in 2022-23.
Earlier this year, the World Bank stated that India would need to maintain an average growth of 7.8 per cent over the next 22 years to realize its aspiration of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
The World Bank emphasized, however, that achieving this target would require reforms and implementation efforts as ambitious as the goal itself.
