SBI Branch Customers Forced to Use Ladder After Staircase Demolished in Anti-Encroachment Drive

In Odisha's Bhadrak district, customers of an SBI branch were forced to climb a ladder mounted on a tractor after the building's staircase was demolished during an anti-encroachment operation. The unusual arrangement lasted for two days until public outrage prompted the installation of a proper steel staircase, highlighting the consequences of unresolved encroachment disputes.

Following the demolition, the bank placed a ladder to assist staff and customers.

Bhadrak:

A State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Odisha's Bhadrak district lost its entrance when the staircase leading to the first-floor office was demolished during an anti-encroachment drive. As a result, customers had to climb a ladder positioned on a tractor's back to access banking services.

Circulating videos show a ladder placed on a tractor parked beneath the building. People can be seen climbing the ladder while a security guard and another individual assist them with their possessions.

The demolition occurred on November 20 and 21 as part of a comprehensive clearance operation from Charampa Market to Bhadrak Railway Station. According to authorities, numerous shops, homes, and commercial structures were demolished, including the SBI building's front portion and staircase, as they were constructed on encroached land.

Officials stated that public announcements were made and encroachers received two days' notice to vacate. Many shopkeepers voluntarily removed illegal extensions.

Sources indicated that both the bank and building owner had received multiple encroachment notices but failed to respond. The demolition was conducted under the supervision of the Sub-Collector, Tehsildar, and other enforcement officials.

After the demolition, the bank provided the ladder to help staff and customers access the premises from Monday. This arrangement continued for two days, forcing customers with urgent banking needs to use the improvised access. However, following public outcry, the building owner installed a steel staircase on Wednesday, restoring normal entry to the branch.
