The VIT University announced closure until November 30 following student unrest.
A significant disturbance erupted at VIT University in Sehore, Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday night when students protested against what they claimed was substandard food and contaminated water causing a jaundice outbreak on campus.
The situation deteriorated rapidly as enraged students set fire to buses and cars, damaged an ambulance, and vandalized various sections of the university premises, necessitating substantial police presence from five different police stations.
As tensions mounted, university administrators declared a holiday lasting until November 30.
Students alleged that poor-quality food and unsafe drinking water led to widespread illness. Many students reportedly developed jaundice, with some claiming fatalities had occurred due to the contaminated water supply.
The protests intensified after students alleged that when they voiced concerns, they were physically assaulted by hostel wardens and security personnel who attempted to silence them. Students claimed attempts to communicate with university officials resulted in "no clear answers."
When their complaints remained unaddressed, approximately 4,000 students gathered and began destructive protests. They ignited a bus, motorcycle, and ambulance. Additional damage occurred to hostel windows, the reverse osmosis water treatment facility, and other campus infrastructure.
The situation rapidly exceeded the management capabilities of campus authorities. Police forces from Ashta, Jawar, Parvati, Kotwali, and Mandi police stations were dispatched to the location. Senior officials, including the SDM and SDOP of Ashta, attempted to calm the students and restore order.
Nitin Tale, SDM of Ashta, acknowledged issues with food and water quality but refuted reports of any deaths. "Students experienced problems with food and water quality, which triggered the protest. Rumors circulated about student deaths from jaundice, but these are unfounded. We're collecting water and food samples to address deficiencies."
KK Nair, Registrar of VIT Bhopal, also dismissed the death rumors, stating, "Reports of student deaths due to jaundice are completely baseless. No fatalities have occurred at the university. Some jaundice cases have been treated. Water and food have been tested and confirmed safe. We urge people not to spread unsubstantiated information."
Police and district officials are currently investigating multiple aspects of the incident, including allegations of food contamination, the disease outbreak, claims of assault by security personnel, and the extensive property damage.
