Elderly Woman in Himachal Pradesh Takes Her Life After Binding Her Limbs: A Tragic Rural Suicide Case

A 62-year-old woman from a village in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh allegedly committed suicide by consuming insecticide after binding her own hands and legs, according to police reports released Tuesday.

Shakuntala Devi, who resided in Ser village, left her residence at approximately 4 pm on Monday. Around 7 pm, she contacted her husband to inform him that she had consumed insecticide, but he reportedly did not take her statement seriously at the time.

The following day, her husband discovered her body in a field near their home.

Police officials noted that this wasn't the first time the woman had left home without notifying anyone, having done so two or three times previously.

Investigators revealed that Shakuntala Devi had used tape to secure her hands and feet, apparently to prevent herself from instinctively resisting the effects of the poison. They also mentioned that a relative of hers had died by suicide in a similar manner three years prior.

Upon notification of the incident, police officers and a forensic team promptly arrived at the location to collect evidence.

Additional SP Rajesh stated that preliminary investigation points to suicide. He confirmed that no injuries or marks were found on the deceased's body, and her mobile phone and earrings were recovered from the scene.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination as authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
