Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a significant ceremony at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir in Ayodhya, where he hoisted a saffron flag marking the temple's formal completion.
The historic event, known as Dhwajarohan Utsav, took place on Tuesday at the sacred site in Uttar Pradesh. The Prime Minister was joined by RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for this momentous occasion.
In a departure from conventional flag-hoisting methods, the ceremony featured a distinctive approach. Following the completion of Vedic rituals by priests, Prime Minister Modi and Mohan Bhagwat approached a specially designed podium. The platform featured a symbolic hand in 'Namaskara' position placed beside the folded flag.
By moving this symbolic hand toward the flag, the leaders activated a mechanism that raised the saffron flag to the temple's summit, demonstrating an innovative approach to this ceremonial tradition.
After the flag-hoisting ceremony, Prime Minister Modi addressed the gathering, emphasizing the significance of the moment: "This Dharma Dhwaja is not just a flag. It is the flag of the rejuvenation of Indian civilisation. The saffron colour, Suryavansh's insignia, the 'Om' word, and the Kovidara tree impersonate Ram Rajya's glory. This flag is a resolution, a success, a story of struggle to creation... For the coming thousands of centuries, this flag will proclaim Lord Ram's values."
The saffron flag itself holds special significance, measuring 22 feet by 11 feet and crafted from parachute-grade cloth with a sturdy nylon hoisting rope. Now positioned atop the temple's 161-foot spire, the flag incorporates meaningful symbols including the Sun (representing Lord Ram's Surya Vansh lineage), the sacred 'Om', and the Kovidara tree, described as the state tree of Ram Rajya.
This temple's construction journey began when Prime Minister Modi performed the Bhumi Poojan in August 2020. The project moved forward following the Supreme Court's landmark judgment on November 9, 2019, which allocated the 2.77-acre disputed land for the temple's construction.
