Why Reporting Spam Calls Through TRAI DND App Is More Effective Than Simply Blocking Numbers

TRAI urges citizens to use the official DND app to report spam calls rather than just blocking numbers, as the app enables authorities to trace and permanently disconnect over 21 lakh mobile numbers involved in telecom fraud. Simple blocking only hides numbers on personal devices but doesn't prevent scammers from targeting others.

Blocking Not Enough To Stop Spam Calls, Report On DND App: Telecom Regulator

The regulator emphasized that user collective reporting is essential in fighting telecom misuse.

New Delhi:

According to the telecom regulator on Monday, merely blocking phone numbers on mobile devices is insufficient to eliminate spam calls; subscribers should instead report these nuisances through the Trai DND app.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) revealed that based on subscriber complaints registered through the DND app, they have disconnected and blacklisted over 21 lakh mobile numbers and approximately one lakh entities involved in distributing spam and fraudulent messages.

"The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has issued an advisory, encouraging citizens to report spam calls/SMS through the Trai DND app, emphasizing that simply blocking numbers on personal devices does not eliminate spam at its source," the statement indicated.

The regulator highlighted that their actions, based on complaints received through the app, demonstrate that collective user reporting plays a vital role in combating telecom misuse across the country.

"This extensive action was possible because citizens reported spam through the official Trai DND app. When users report spam calls or SMS on the TRAI DND App, it enables TRAI and telecom service providers to trace, verify, and permanently disconnect the offending mobile numbers. In contrast, blocking a number on your phone only prevents it from reaching your personal device—it doesn't stop scammers from contacting others using different numbers," the statement explained.
