New Delhi:

A demonstration against Delhi-NCR's worsening air pollution turned violent at India Gate on Sunday when protesters allegedly attacked law enforcement officers with pepper spray during their removal from the site, according to an official report.

The official stated that three to four police personnel suffered injuries from the pepper spray attack and are currently receiving medical treatment at Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital.

The protesters had congregated near India Gate to demonstrate their concerns about Delhi's 'very poor' air quality and demand immediate action from authorities. Police later dispersed the gathering.

"Some protesters entered the C-hexagon area and attempted to breach the barricades installed to control movement. We tried explaining that ambulances and medical personnel were stuck behind them requiring urgent passage, but they became highly agitated," explained the senior police officer.

Sensing potential escalation into a physical confrontation, law enforcement personnel advised the demonstrators to retreat.

"They refused compliance, broke through the barricade, moved onto the road, and sat down. While our teams were attempting to remove them, several protesters attacked police personnel using chilli spray. Three to four officers sustained injuries and are now undergoing medical treatment," the officer added.

The protesters were subsequently removed from the C-hexagon to prevent traffic disruption in the area.

"This was highly unusual. This marks the first instance where protesters have employed chilli spray against officers managing traffic and maintaining law and order," Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla told PTI.

According to Mahla, this incident represents the first time police personnel have encountered pepper spray during crowd control operations.

"Several of our officers were sprayed directly in the eyes and face and are currently receiving medical attention at RML Hospital. Legal proceedings are being initiated regarding this matter," he concluded.
