A 38-year-old auto rickshaw driver in Karnataka's Chitradurga self-immolated after being stopped during a routine drink-and-drive check on Saturday evening.

The dramatic event occurred at Mahatma Gandhi circle when police reportedly confiscated Thippeswamy's auto during their inspection. When authorities requested Thippeswamy to submit to a breath analysis test, he allegedly refused and began a verbal confrontation. Shortly thereafter, he attempted to set himself on fire.

According to police officials, Thippeswamy initially intended to pour petrol onto the ground as a protest. However, because he was holding a bottle of petrol that had partially spilled onto his T-shirt, the flames spread to his clothing. He suffered severe burn injuries and was immediately transported to a hospital. Medical professionals report that the auto driver sustained burns covering approximately 70 percent of his body and remains in critical condition.

Footage of the incident shows law enforcement officers directing the driver to remain seated in his auto while questioning him about operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, cautioning that his actions could result in an accident. In the video, Thippeswamy can be heard confirming his alcohol consumption and accusing the officers of grabbing him by the collar.

Authorities have registered a case against Thippeswamy for attempted suicide with specific intent and for attempting to prevent public servants from performing their official duties.
