Several jackals managed to escape from their enclosure at Delhi's National Zoological Park on Saturday morning, triggering an immediate search operation throughout the forested areas behind the animal exhibits, according to zoo officials.
The incident occurred during early morning hours when the jackals reportedly found a way out through the rear portion of their enclosure, which borders a dense forest patch forming part of the zoo's outer boundary.
A zoo representative confirmed that visitors remained completely unaware of the situation and at no point were they in any danger from the escaped animals.
Officials involved with the matter explained that the jackals likely exploited a gap in the fencing at the back of their habitat. In response, multiple search teams were promptly deployed across the wooded area to locate and safely return the animals.
The jackal enclosure features high wire mesh barriers and includes natural elements such as burrows, shade-providing structures, and shelter areas. Authorities are currently examining the section where the breach occurred to determine exactly how the animals managed to escape.
Preliminary assessments indicate that the jackals have not ventured toward any visitor pathways and are most likely still contained within the broader zoo premises.
Attempts to reach the Administration Department of Delhi zoo for further comment were unsuccessful, with calls and messages remaining unanswered at the time of reporting.
This incident has once again raised questions about the zoo's animal management protocols and overall preparedness for such situations.
