Lalit Adhikari, who worked as a primary school teacher, tragically lost his life in a road accident while returning home after completing his duties as a Booth Level Officer (BLO) in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district on Thursday.

The incident occurred in the Sitalkuchi block after Adhikari had finished his Special Intensive Revision (SIR) work related to electoral rolls. A vehicle struck him, causing critical injuries. Local residents immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, from where he was transferred to a private medical facility. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries despite medical intervention.

Adhikari was one of three staff members from the Mahish Muri Primary School who had been assigned BLO responsibilities. On the day of the accident, he had gone to complete SIR-related tasks after his regular school hours.

His wife, Shyamali Adhikari, expressed her devastation, noting that her husband was the family's sole breadwinner. "Our two sons and I are now helpless," she stated in her grief.

North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha visited the bereaved family on Friday, offering condolences and presenting them with financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh. Minister Guha conveyed that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was deeply saddened upon hearing about Adhikari's death and had instructed immediate financial support for the family.

Trinamool spokesperson Partha Pratim Roy commented on the situation, noting that the teacher had been under significant stress and had to travel frequently, which ultimately led to the fatal accident. "We are shocked by this tragic death of a BLO on duty," he added.

During the minister's visit, Adhikari's family requested employment for his son. Minister Guha assured them that the state government would consider their request with compassion.
