Bengaluru:

The Karnataka government has released a safety advisory on Tuesday for Sabarimala pilgrims from the state following reports of Amoebic meningoencephalitis cases caused by the "brain-eating amoeba" Naegleria fowleri in neighboring Kerala. The advisory urges pilgrims to exercise caution and follow specific preventive measures to avoid infection.

This important health notice was issued by the Commissionerate of Health and Family Welfare Services.

Naegleria fowleri typically inhabits warm freshwater sources, including stagnant water bodies, ponds, lakes, and inadequately maintained swimming pools.

The advisory emphasizes that while the infection cannot be transmitted from person to person or by consuming contaminated water, Naegleria fowleri is an extremely virulent microorganism that can reach the brain when water containing it is inhaled, potentially causing Amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare but often fatal disease.

The advisory recommends, "When bathing in stagnant water during the Yatra, use nose clips or hold your nose firmly to prevent water entry as a precautionary measure."

It further warns, "Should you experience symptoms including fever, intense headache, nausea or vomiting, stiff neck, confusion, changes in mental status, or behavioral abnormalities within seven days after water contact, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest government healthcare facility."
