On Children's Day - a celebration intended to provide students with extra care and attention - a tragic incident occurred when a 12-year-old student in Maharashtra died following corporal punishment administered by her teacher for arriving at school merely ten minutes late.
Kajal Gond, who attended Class 6 at Shree Hanumant Vidya Mandir High School in Vasai, was reportedly forced to perform 100 sit-ups as punishment last Friday. Immediately after completing this strenuous exercise, she began suffering from intense lower back pain.
Upon returning home, Kajal's health status continued to decline, necessitating her admission to a hospital in Nalasopara.
As her condition deteriorated further, she was transferred to JJ Hospital in Mumbai, where she ultimately succumbed while undergoing treatment.
Kajal's family has claimed that the severe punishment caused her rapid health deterioration, leading to her death. They further stated that she was wearing her schoolbag during the forced sit-ups, which exacerbated her pain.
This incident has sparked outrage among parents and community members, who are demanding strict action against both the teacher and the school administration.
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has issued a warning that the school will not be permitted to resume operations until criminal charges are filed against those responsible for this tragedy. (With inputs from Puja Bhardwaj)
