Delhi High Court Addresses Estate Dispute Between Karisma Kapoor's Children and Late Sunjay Kapur's Wife

The Delhi High Court has intervened in a high-profile inheritance battle over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur's Rs 30,000 crore estate. Karisma Kapoor's children allege their stepmother Priya Kapur forged their father's will while neglecting their educational expenses, claims Priya's legal team denies. Justice Jyoti Singh urged parties to resolve such matters outside court while the authenticity of Sunjay Kapur's will remains under scrutiny.

Melodrama: Court As Karisma Kapoor's Daughter Flags Unpaid College Fees

The Delhi High Court urged parties to avoid melodrama when addressing Karisma Kapoor's daughter Samaira's claim that two months of her university tuition in the United States remained unpaid from her late father Sunjay Kapur's estate.

This matter emerges amid ongoing litigation concerning the industrialist's estimated Rs 30,000 crore estate. Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing Kapoor's children Samaira and Kiaan, contended that Priya Kapur, Sunjay's widow, had withheld educational expense payments after the petition was filed. He suggested this reflected broader issues with the estate's current administration and raised questions about the legitimacy of Sunjay Kapur's will.

Priya Kapur's legal representative, senior advocate Rajiv Nayar, dismissed these allegations as fabricated, asserting that all educational fees had been paid and that Priya had consistently attended to the children's needs. He implied the issue was raised primarily to generate media coverage.

Justice Jyoti Singh expressed clear frustration with the matter reaching her courtroom, instructing senior advocate Shyel Trehan, also representing Priya Kapur, to ensure such issues are resolved outside court. "I don't want to spend more than 30 seconds on this. This question should not come to my court again. I don't want this hearing to be melodramatic. I put this onus on you," the Court stated.

At the core of this legal dispute is Samaira and Kiaan's allegation that Priya Kapur forged their father's will to seize control of his assets following his death during a London polo match in June. The siblings have characterized Priya as a "Cinderella stepmother" who has alienated them from their father's estate.

The contested will, dated March 21, 2025, purportedly bequeaths Sunjay Kapur's entire personal estate to Priya Sachdeva Kapur. Jethmalani highlighted discrepancies in the document's timeline, noting that metadata and device logs suggest activities related to the will occurred on October 3, 2025, and March 24, 2025, contradicting the official narrative.

Additional inconsistencies were raised regarding the will's "last modified" timestamp from March 17, 2025, which conflicts with the respondents' account. Jethmalani questioned why the will initially lacked an executor and why Sunjay allegedly planned to designate Vivek Singh, CEO of Sona Comstar, as executor.

Jethmalani also noted misspellings of Sunjay's name in the document and alleged that signatures were obtained on blank sheets—claims that Nayyar dismissed as typical challenges in will contests.

Previously, the high court directed Priya Kapur to provide an inventory of Sunjay's assets. Priya has informed the court that Karisma's children have already received Rs 1,900 crore from the family trust.

Samaira and Kiaan are children from Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur's 13-year marriage, which ended in 2016, after which Sunjay married Priya Kapur.
