Bihar witnessed an unprecedented 67.13% voter turnout in the 2025 assembly elections, marking the highest participation since 1951.
In a remarkable electoral outcome from Bihar's Imamganj Assembly constituency, Deepa Kumari of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) emerged victorious with a substantial margin in the 2025 assembly elections.
Securing an impressive 1,04,861 votes, Kumari established a commanding lead of 25,856 votes over her closest challenger, Ritu Priya Chaudhary of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
Chaudhary, who contested against Jitan Ram Manjhi's daughter-in-law, managed to garner 79,005 votes, while Dr. Ajeet Kumar representing the Jan Suraaj Party received 11,912 votes.
After 29 rounds of counting, the results revealed a decisively one-sided contest with all other candidates significantly trailing behind the top contenders.
Imamganj, once plagued by Naxal activities, has long faced development challenges. Strategically positioned near the Bihar-Jharkhand border, the constituency serves as a crucial transit and trade corridor between the two states. Agriculture forms the backbone of the local economy, with rice, maize, wheat, and pulses as principal crops.
The constituency holds significant historical value as part of the ancient Magadha region, which was once the center of early Indian civilization. Its cultural importance is further enhanced by its proximity to Bodh Gaya, one of Buddhism's most sacred pilgrimage destinations.
While South Bihar previously experienced substantial challenges from Naxal activities, security conditions have notably improved in recent years. With a considerable Muslim population and the seat being reserved for Scheduled Castes, social dynamics play a crucial role in shaping electoral outcomes.
Deepa Kumari, representing the NDA coalition, has held the seat since 2024 when she won a by-election with a margin of 5,945 votes against RJD's Raushan Kumar after Jitan Ram Manjhi vacated the seat to pursue national politics.
In the 2010 Bihar Assembly elections, Uday Narain Choudhary of Janata Dal (United) narrowly defeated RJD's Raushan Kumar by 1,211 votes, securing 44,126 votes compared to Kumar's 42,915.
The 2015 elections saw Jitan Ram Manjhi, leader of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), achieve a decisive victory over RJD's Uday Narain Choudhary with a substantial margin of 29,408 votes. Manjhi received 79,389 votes while Choudhary obtained 49,981.
Manjhi successfully defended the seat in 2020, though with a reduced margin of 16,034 votes against the same opponent, Uday Narain Choudhary from RJD.
According to the Election Commission's current data, BJP has secured 55 seats and leads in 35 more. JDU has won 33 seats, while LJP (RV) has claimed 7, and HAM has won 1.
The opposition RJD has won 8 seats and maintains leads in 17 others. Congress has secured 1 seat, AIMIM 4, CPI (ML)(L) 1, and CPI(M) 1.
The NDA's strong performance in Bihar can be attributed to the robust showing by major allies including BJP and JD(U), complemented by comprehensive support from Chirag Paswan's LJP(RV) and Upendra Kushwaha's Rashtriya Lok Morcha.
Notably, Bihar's historic 67.13% voter turnout represented the highest participation rate since 1951, with women voters (71.6%) significantly outnumbering men (62.8%).
