NDA Secures Sweeping Victory in Bihar as PM Modi Predicts Possible Congress Split

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses BJP supporters following NDA's comprehensive victory in Bihar elections, predicting a potential split within Congress while highlighting its declining performance. The BJP emerges as the single-largest party with JDU following closely, demonstrating PM Modi's continued popularity despite challenges faced by Nitish Kumar's government.

New Delhi:

On the day the NDA secured a comprehensive victory in Bihar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi predicted a potential split within the Congress party and cautioned its allies about the Grand Old Party's intentions.

"The Congress criticizes the Election Commission, makes frivolous complaints about baseless issues like 'vote chori', divides people on basis of religion and caste... The Congress has no positive vision for the country," he stated during his address to BJP supporters at party headquarters in Delhi.

"The truth is that today, Congress, and I say this very seriously, today Congress has become the Muslim League Maoist Congress... And the entire agenda of Congress now runs on this. And because of this, even within Congress, a new branch is emerging, which is even worse than this negative politics," he remarked.

He emphasized that this new faction's emergence has created profound disappointment within Congress ranks.

"And I have a suspicion that there may be another big division of Congress in the future. And friends, the supporters of Congress have also begun to understand that Congress is drowning everyone in its negative politics. Everyone is drowning at the same time," he added.

While Lalu Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal delivered one of its poorest performances in Bihar, leading in approximately 25 seats, the Congress has declined from its 19 seats won in 2020 to leading in only about five seats. Its vote share has also decreased from 9.48 percent to approximately 8 percent.

The party's 2020 performance was considered below par, which had disappointed ally RJD and affected the seat-sharing process for this election. The two parties failed to reach an agreement and ended up fielding candidates independently, resulting in friendly contests in several seats.

Nevertheless, both parties insisted this was intentional and dictated by ground realities in various constituencies.

The Congress also conducted an uninspiring campaign prior to the election, which lost momentum after the initial enthusiasm of the Voter Adhikar Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi. He was occasionally joined by Tejashwi Yadav at events. However, by the time the BJP's powerful election machinery dominated the state, Gandhi was notably absent, leaving the RJD dissatisfied.

The result - the NDA is now poised to sweep Bihar, advancing in approximately 200 of the state's 243 seats. The BJP is positioned to emerge as the single-largest party with nearly 95 percent strike rate, confirming PM Modi's popularity. A rejuvenated JDU follows closely behind, with voters supporting the aging Nitish Kumar despite reports of anti-incumbency and health concerns.
