Patna: Nitish Kumar's JDU has emerged as the frontrunner in Bihar's election, positioning itself as the single-largest party in early counting rounds. By 1 pm, JDU was leading in 79 of its 101 contested seats, showing remarkable growth with 36 seats more than its 2020 performance. The BJP, its alliance partner, demonstrated strong results with leads in 89 constituencies. Together, the NDA coalition has surpassed the 185-seat mark, which if maintained, would ensure a comfortable government formation. However, with several counting rounds remaining, these numbers remain subject to change.
The opposition parties have shown weaker results, with RJD ahead in 37 seats and Congress in only 7. Notably, Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party, which was widely anticipated as a potential game-changer, failed to secure a lead in any constituency. JDU's impressive performance confirms its enduring strength in Bihar's political landscape, suggesting that Nitish Kumar's governance record continues to resonate with voters even after two decades in power.
This strong showing by JDU comes at a significant time when many political observers had begun viewing it as the weaker component within the NDA coalition.
The counting trends indicate that the Mahagathbandhan's campaign strategy, which questioned Nitish Kumar's health and promoted RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav as a more youthful and energetic alternative for Chief Minister, failed to gain traction among voters. Should Nitish Kumar take the oath of office again, it will mark his tenth time as Chief Minister. Despite numerous political realignments over the past two decades that critics claimed would diminish his popularity, his party's current electoral performance demonstrates that his governance record continues to provide political stability amid electoral challenges.
Another significant achiever within the NDA alliance is Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas). The Union Minister, who negotiated assertively during seat-sharing discussions, appears to be leading his party to impressive results. Of the 28 seats LJP (RV) contested, it currently leads in 23. If these trends hold, this would represent another major victory for Paswan, whose party achieved a perfect 5/5 result in last year's Lok Sabha elections.
