The apprehension of Dr. Mohammad Arif, a senior resident doctor in the Cardiology department at the LPS Institute of Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery in Kanpur, related to the Delhi blast case, has stunned those who knew him.
Kanhaiya Lal, who rented accommodation to Arif in Ashok Nagar near Fatima School, informed ANI that the doctor's behavior never raised any concerns, despite his brief stay of less than a month. Lal mentioned that Arif maintained a private lifestyle with minimal visitors.
"His stay here lasted less than a month. He rarely received visitors. Two individuals resided here - Abhishek and Arif. Abhishek introduced Arif as his colleague, a doctor working in the cardiology department. A team of four individuals arrived and proceeded to unlock Arif's room. My son inquired about their identity. They explained they came to collect his belongings. After communicating with Arif, my son permitted them access. There was nothing unusual about Arif's conduct," Lal explained.
Dr. Rakesh Verma, Director of LPS Institute of Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery in Kanpur, announced on Thursday that the administration will implement thorough police verification for all employees. During a press conference, Verma described Dr. Mohammad Arif as an "exceptional student" who had achieved a "remarkable rank".
"He attained an impressive rank of 1008. He demonstrated exceptional academic abilities. We will ensure comprehensive police verification for everyone. The administration will arrange police verification for each employee at an individual level," he stated.
Dr. Awadhesh Sharma, a professor, mentioned that Dr. Arif holds the position of senior resident in DM/MCh Cardiology since August and departed from the premises yesterday evening after completing his shift.
Arif, originally from Anantnag in Kashmir, has been detained by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Kanpur due to an alleged connection with Delhi blast suspect Dr. Shaheen Saeed.
During a press conference, Sharma noted that Arif had been residing in rented accommodation in Kanpur's Ashok Nagar as hostel facilities were unavailable initially.
"Each year, students from across the country come here for three years of training in various programs. This year, in the first year of DM Cardiology, a doctor named Mohammad Arif Mir, whose father is listed in our hospital records as Ghulam Hasan Mir, joined us in August 2025 as a senior resident in the DM Cardiology postgraduate super-specialty program. This program extends over three years," the professor explained.
A medical student identified as Mohammad Arif has been detained by the Uttar Pradesh ATS in Kanpur due to an alleged connection with Delhi blast suspect Dr. Shaheen Saeed, according to officials.
Dr. Shaheen Saeed was previously arrested in relation to the Faridabad arms and explosive seizure case.
A joint team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and Delhi Police recovered human remains on Thursday at New Lajpat Rai Market near the blast site in the national capital, where 12 people lost their lives.
