India's strategic capabilities received a significant boost as the Mudh-Nyoma airbase in Ladakh became operational, with Air Chief Marshal AP Singh landing in a C-130J transport aircraft. Located just 25km from the China border at 13,000 feet elevation, this Rs 218-crore facility represents India's fourth Air Force base in Ladakh and enhances military readiness in this sensitive region.

Nyoma Airbase Near China Border Operationalised, Air Force Chief Lands Aboard C-130J

Air Chief Marshal AP Singh arrived at the newly operationalised Mudh-Nyoma airbase in Ladakh on Wednesday, landing aboard a C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft. Western Air Command chief Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra accompanied him during this significant visit.

The strategic Mudh-Nyoma airbase, situated at an impressive elevation of approximately 13,000 feet, is positioned just 25 kilometers from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. Military officials anticipate that this newly operational base will substantially enhance India's combat readiness in this sensitive border region.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) executed the Rs 218-crore project to develop this crucial military infrastructure. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had laid the foundation stone for this strategic airbase in September 2023.

With its operationalisation complete, Mudh-Nyoma airbase now has the capability to accommodate fighter jets, helicopters, and transport aircraft. This makes it the fourth operational Air Force base in Ladakh, joining existing facilities in Leh, Kargil, and Thoise. For comparison, the Kargil airstrip is situated at an altitude of approximately 10,500 feet.

The defence ministry has been prioritizing infrastructure enhancement at virtually all airfields along the LAC, including Advanced Landing Grounds (ALGs), in accordance with operational requirements. Additionally, efforts are underway to improve infrastructure at the Daulat Beg Oldi Advanced Landing Ground in Ladakh, which holds the distinction of being the world's highest airfield at an altitude of 16,700 feet and is located in close proximity to the LAC.
