New Delhi:
Monday's explosion near Delhi's Red Fort, which claimed at least nine lives and injured a dozen others, has been classified as a "heinous terror incident" by the Cabinet Committee on Security during their high-level meeting today.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the crucial security conference, with Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh among the key attendees.
The Union Cabinet, convening at the Prime Minister's residence, observed two minutes of silence honoring the victims before formally adopting a resolution condemning the attack. The government issued a forceful statement describing the explosion as "a dastardly and cowardly act perpetrated by anti-national forces" while emphasizing India's "unwavering commitment to a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism in all its forms and manifestations."
In its official response, the government expressed "profound grief over the loss of innocent lives" and extended sympathies to families of the deceased. Officials also praised the "prompt efforts of medical personnel and emergency responders" who rushed to assist victims, noting that "their dedication and sense of duty are deeply commendable."
The Cabinet acknowledged solidarity messages received from "many governments around the world" and instructed that the investigation proceed with "utmost urgency and professionalism to ensure the perpetrators, their collaborators, and sponsors are identified and brought to justice without delay."
The devastating blast occurred on the evening of November 10, when a white Hyundai i20 exploded near the Red Fort Metro Station on Netaji Subhash Marg, a busy thoroughfare adjacent to both the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk. The powerful explosion damaged multiple vehicles and shattered windows in surrounding buildings.
Preliminary investigation findings indicate that the vehicle was operated by Dr Umar Muhammad, a 32-year-old medical professional previously affiliated with Al Falah University in Faridabad.
