Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has made a public appeal urging investigating agencies to ensure that parents of doctors arrested in connection with the Delhi blast and Faridabad explosives case are not subjected to harassment.
During a press conference held in Srinagar on Wednesday, Mufti strongly condemned the suicide bombing near Red Fort that resulted in nine fatalities and left 20 individuals injured. She emphasized the need for authorities to conduct a thorough, fair, and transparent investigation into the incident.
"Our educated doctors are suffering. I demand a complete and fair investigation of the Delhi blast. If doctors are indeed involved in this attack, it represents a deeply concerning situation for our entire community. I appeal to the Delhi Government to ensure the investigation remains free and fair," stated the PDP chief.
Mufti specifically called on authorities to refrain from targeting family members of the accused individuals. "The families are not involved in these activities. Targeting them is inappropriate. Those found guilty should face consequences, but innocent people should not be harassed," she added.
She further elaborated, "The government needs to make proper distinctions. Individuals who are genuinely involved in criminal activities should face severe punishment. However, relatives are being detained without substantial evidence. They deserve proper treatment. This investigation should be conducted as just that—an investigation. Even though no guilt has been established, you're arresting mothers, fathers, siblings based on mere suspicion and subjecting them to mistreatment. This approach is unacceptable."
Mufti's statements follow claims by the mother of Dr. Muzammil, one of the doctors arrested in Faridabad, who has denied all allegations against her son. She also reported that the family has been prevented from meeting him since his arrest.
Currently, three doctors—Shaheen Saeed, Muzammil Shakeel Ganale, and Adeel Rather—remain in custody. Another physician, Umar Nabi, is believed to have been the suicide bomber who perished in the November 10 blast.
Just hours before the Delhi suicide bombing, Jammu and Kashmir Police discovered approximately 3,000 kg of explosives from two residences in Faridabad, Haryana, registered to Dr. Muzammil Shakeel Ganale.
The seized materials included 350 kg of ammonium nitrate, a fertilizer that can be utilized in manufacturing powerful explosives. Additional items related to explosive devices, including detonators and timers, were also found during the search.
In a separate development, Dr. Saeed was apprehended after police discovered an assault rifle and ammunition in her vehicle. Investigators claim she was involved in establishing a women's division of the banned terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed.
