Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the sacred Kalachakra ceremony during his visit to Bhutan on Wednesday, marking the conclusion of his two-day diplomatic journey focused on enhancing bilateral relations with the neighboring country. Earlier that day, he also met with the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck.
The previous day, PM Modi engaged in comprehensive discussions with Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, addressing collaboration in various sectors including energy, connectivity, capacity building, technology, defense, and security. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Prime Minister extended congratulations to the Fourth King on his 70th birthday, conveying India's "best wishes and prayers for his continued good health and well-being."
PM Modi shared on social media that he had "the honour of inaugurating Kālacakra 'Wheel of Time' Empowerment" alongside the Bhutanese King and the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. The ceremony was presided over by His Holiness the Je Khenpo, which PM Modi noted made the occasion "even more special."
The Kalachakra Ceremony derives its name from Sanskrit, with "kala" meaning "time" and "chakra" meaning "wheel." It represents one of Tibetan Buddhism's most revered rituals. Grounded in the Kalachakra Tantra teachings, also referred to as the "Wheel of Time," the ceremony symbolizes the cycles of time and existence at both cosmic and personal levels, as well as the path to spiritual liberation.
Typically conducted by high-ranking lamas, including the Dalai Lama, the ceremony aims to promote peace, harmony, and spiritual transformation among participants.
The Kalachakra teachings are structured around three distinct aspects known as the "wheels" of time: the Outer Wheel explains universal cycles, planetary movements, seasons, and historical epochs; the Inner Wheel concentrates on human physiology and psychology; while the Alternative Wheel guides practitioners through tantric spiritual practices.
During the elaborate ritual, monks create a detailed sand mandala representing the Kalachakra Mandala Palace. The ceremony incorporates sacred dances, prayers, and empowerment rituals where participants receive vows and blessings from the officiating teacher. These ceremonies are frequently held as public events to bestow blessings upon large gatherings.
As part of his diplomatic visit, PM Modi and Bhutan's King jointly inaugurated the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, an important symbol of energy cooperation between India and Bhutan.
"Had a very good meeting with His Majesty. We covered the full range of India-Bhutan relations," the Prime Minister stated on X, adding that India takes pride in being "a key partner in Bhutan's development journey."
Additionally, PM Modi and the Bhutanese King offered prayers before Lord Buddha's Holy Relics at Thimphu's Tashichhodzong. These relics, brought from India for public viewing, commemorate both the Fourth King's 70th birth anniversary and the Global Peace Prayer Festival organized by Bhutan's royal government.
