A section of the highway leading to Thane had been closed for traffic from 6 am until 9 pm.
Mumbai:
Tragedy struck on Thursday when a 16-month-old infant lost his life after the ambulance transporting him remained trapped in traffic for more than five hours on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway.
The National Highway experienced severe congestion due to ongoing construction activities on the Thane-Ghodbunder road, which serves as a connector to the highway. Authorities had closed the Thane-bound stretch from early morning (6 am) until night (9 pm) in an attempt to prevent traffic congestion within Thane city.
The infant, who had suffered critical pelvic injuries, was receiving care at Galaxy Hospital in Chinchoti, Naigaon. Medical professionals had recommended an urgent transfer to a Mumbai hospital for specialized treatment. Tragically, the delay in medical care resulting from the traffic situation led to the child's death.
This incident follows a similar tragedy from July, when a woman died after being caught in traffic congestion along the same highway section.
Chhaya Kaushik, who had sustained severe injuries from a fallen tree, was being transported from Palghar to Mumbai when her ambulance became stuck in the gridlock on the Thane-Ghodbunder highway. She succumbed to her injuries before receiving any medical treatment.
