Adani Group has officially launched its entry into the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) sector with an ambitious 1,126 MW/3,530 megawatt-hour project scheduled for commissioning by March 2026.
Based in Ahmedabad, this groundbreaking initiative will feature more than 700 BESS containers, establishing it as India's largest battery storage installation and positioning it among the world's most significant single-location BESS deployments.
The remarkable project boasts a power capacity of 1,126 MW with 3,530 MWh energy storage capacity, effectively providing 3 hours of extended power delivery at full capacity.
Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group, emphasized the strategic importance of this venture, stating, "Energy storage is the cornerstone of a renewable-powered future. With this historic project, we are not only setting global benchmarks but also reinforcing our commitment to India's energy independence and sustainability. This initiative will enable us to deliver reliable, clean, and affordable energy solutions at scale."
This strategic expansion places Adani Group alongside global energy leaders investing in large-scale storage infrastructure, marking a transformative development in India's clean energy journey.
Company representatives highlighted that this initiative represents a crucial step toward enhancing India's energy security, enabling round-the-clock clean electricity generation, and supporting the nation's transition toward a low-carbon future.
The BESS installation will serve multiple critical functions including alleviating peak load pressures, reducing transmission congestion, and mitigating solar curtailment, thereby enhancing overall grid reliability and operational efficiency.
Currently in advanced deployment stages at Khavda, the world's largest renewable energy plant, the project utilizes cutting-edge lithium-ion battery technology integrated with sophisticated energy management systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
This deployment will primarily support peak load management and energy shifting operations, playing an essential role in decarbonizing India's power sector.
Looking ahead, Adani Group has announced plans to deploy an additional 15 GWh of BESS capacity by March 2027, with ambitious long-term targets of reaching 50 GWh total capacity over the next five years.
