Mumbai:
As civic polls approach in Maharashtra, political tactics are intensifying across Mumbai and other metropolitan areas. While Uddhav and Raj Thackeray display renewed political vigor after their first public reunion in twenty years, the BJP is reinforcing its core right-wing message—with its leaders making pointed statements suggesting the opposition Shiv Sena and MNS are engaged in appeasement politics.
The most recent incident to become politically charged was Maharashtra Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha's supposedly routine inspection visit to Mumbai's KEM Hospital.
Lodha publicly criticized the administration of the BMC-operated hospital, including its dean, regarding inadequate facilities and maintenance issues.
"I am extremely disappointed. Patients lack proper seating areas and face delayed attention, while staff and authorities enjoy air-conditioned offices," Lodha stated. He further claimed patients were compelled to seek basic medical tests at private clinics due to insufficient infrastructure.
When questioned about responsibility, Lodha directly implicated the Thackeray-led city administration, which managed the Brihanmumbai corporation for over two decades.
"Those who governed the city for 20 years bear responsibility for this situation," he declared.
The BMC last held elections in 2017. Following its dissolution in 2022, the city has operated directly under the Mahayuti-led state government through a commissioner.
"We have controlled the BMC for three years. However, all officers are appointees from the previous administration," Lodha explained.
He then elevated his criticism with communal overtones, alleging corruption in civic licensing and singling out a specific community.
"Someone from here was directed to Khan, who demanded lakhs for a license. They are everywhere now... all dalals are Khans. They are plundering the city," Lodha claimed.
When NDTV inquired whether he was targeting an entire community based on individual misconduct, the minister remained firm: "We will target them. If they are wrong, they will be targeted."
Marathiness vs Hindutva
The Thackeray brothers have returned to their foundational "Marathi first" platform, particularly following the recent Marathi language controversy. Their joint appearances indicate a heightened focus on Marathi pride and the "Marathi manoos."
Meanwhile, the BJP appears to be advancing a more pronounced Hindutva narrative.
Shortly after assuming office, newly-appointed Mumbai BJP chief Ameet Satam has suggested that Mumbai could have a "Khan mayor" if the Thackerays return to power.
