India Proposes E-Commerce Rules Requiring Filters On 'Country Of Origin'

A significant delegation of Indian exporters is scheduled to commence a four-day visit to Moscow on Tuesday (Representational).

On Monday, the Indian government introduced a proposal mandating e-commerce platforms to implement filters based on 'country of origin,' with the aim of enhancing the discoverability of domestic products and strengthening the government's self-reliance initiative.

According to a statement from India's consumer affairs ministry, the proposed amendment to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, "ensures a level-playing field for Indian manufacturers, helping domestic products gain equal visibility alongside imported goods and encouraging consumers to choose locally made alternatives."

The impact of the United States doubling tariffs on certain goods to 50% since August 27 has affected thousands of Indian artisans and small businesses.

A substantial delegation of Indian exporters will begin a four-day visit to Moscow on Tuesday, as part of New Delhi's strategic efforts to diversify export markets in response to the significant tariff increases implemented by U.S. President Donald Trump.
