New Delhi:

A man allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself at Jantar Mantar on Monday, where he had been protesting to secure employment for his sister in the Madhya Pradesh education department, according to police reports.

Lokendra, aged 40, who hailed from Madhya Pradesh's Morena district, had been staying in the national capital since July. He was advocating for his sister to receive a job on compassionate grounds and had previously organized demonstrations at Jantar Mantar regarding this issue, a senior police officer explained.

"His brother-in-law was employed as a peon in Madhya Pradesh's Department of Education. Following his death in 2019, the deceased had been requesting the government to provide his sister with employment in the department on compassionate grounds," the officer stated.

The incident occurred around 9 am on Monday when Lokendra allegedly took his own life with a firearm, the officer added.

Upon receiving notification, police teams were dispatched to the location where they discovered the man's body with a gunshot wound.

"Police personnel are currently at the scene, which has been secured and cordoned off," the officer reported.

The remains will undergo a postmortem examination following the completion of required legal procedures.

"Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the man's self-inflicted shooting. A case has been registered and further investigation is currently in progress," the officer concluded.
