The body of one student was recovered on Saturday, with two more found the following day.
In a tragic incident in Assam's Dima Hasao district, authorities have recovered the bodies of three students from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar who drowned at a waterfall on Sunday.
The deceased students have been identified as 20-year-old Sarva Kritika and Sauhard Rai, both from Uttar Pradesh, and 19-year-old Radhika Kumari from Bihar.
According to local reports, the students had gone for an excursion on Saturday morning when they tragically fell into a waterfall near Harangajao village. Recovery efforts yielded one body on Saturday evening, while the remaining two bodies were discovered around 12:30 pm on Sunday.
Dima Hasao's Additional Superintendent of Police, Farukh Ahmed, stated that authorities received notification about the accident on Saturday afternoon. Two State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were immediately deployed to the location.
"After extensive search operations, one body was recovered Saturday evening, and today two more bodies were found submerged. All three have been transported to Haflong for post-mortem examination," Ahmed explained.
NIT Silchar Director Dilip Kumar Baidya confirmed that all three were first-year students who had left campus without following proper protocols.
"Our institution requires all students to inform relevant authorities before departing campus. Unfortunately, some students disregard this rule, which happened in this instance as well," Director Baidya noted.
The institute has contacted the parents of the deceased students and requested them to visit the campus. Police officials in Dima Hasao reported that parents of two students have already arrived in the district, with others en route.
"Since the incident occurred within Dima Hasao jurisdiction, local police are managing the legal procedures. Parents may either collect their children's remains directly from Haflong or request transportation to the NIT campus, which we will arrange," the director added.
