Pakistan's ISI's secret unit 'S1' is suspected to have trained the Pahalgam terrorists
New Delhi:
A covert unit designated as "S1" within Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has been significantly involved in exporting terrorism to India, spanning from the 1993 Mumbai blasts to the recent terrorist attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, according to sources who spoke to NDTV.
Intelligence sources reveal that S1 represents "Subversion 1." This specialized unit is considered the primary force driving cross-border terrorism from Pakistan.
Sources indicate that a Colonel from the Pakistani Army heads the S1 unit, while two senior officers with code names 'Gazi 1' and 'Gazi 2' oversee active operations.
The unit maintains its headquarters in Islamabad, with the majority of its terrorist activities reportedly funded through drug money.
According to intelligence sources, S1 personnel and trainers possess expertise in crafting various bombs and improvised explosive devices, and are highly proficient with multiple small arms. The unit is believed to possess detailed maps of numerous locations across India.
Sources stated that S1 has been functioning for approximately 25 years, though India's security agencies have only recently decoded the full extent of its operations. This unit, specifically tasked with executing terrorist attacks in India, maintains connections with all terrorist groups operating in Pakistan.
S1 personnel have reportedly been identified in training camps of terrorist organizations including Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. They attempt to remain inconspicuous by growing long beards and wearing local ethnic attire, sources added.
The unit operates with such secrecy that many terrorist groups remain unaware that their trainers belong to S1. Sources indicate that over the past two decades, S1 has trained thousands of terrorists.
