Lucknow:
Police have filed an FIR against a prisoner accused of a Rs 3,700 crore cyber fraud after he allegedly sent threatening emails to an Allahabad High Court judge using a police constable's mobile device, authorities announced on Sunday.
Officials reported that Anubhav Mittal, who is currently incarcerated in Lucknow jail for allegedly defrauding approximately seven lakh investors through a fraudulent online trading operation, sent the threatening message under a fabricated identity in an attempt to implicate another prisoner.
According to officials, the message contained a death threat against a judge of the Lucknow bench. Investigations by the Cyber Cell and Crime Branch revealed that the threatening communication originated from Constable Ajay Kumar's phone.
"Criminal intimidation and IT Act violations have been charged against Anubhav Mittal and police constable Ajay Kumar, who is stationed at Police Lines. The formal complaint was registered Friday. The constable had accompanied Mittal during his November 4 court appearance," a senior official told PTI.
Police reported that Kumar stated Mittal had requested to use his phone on November 4 ostensibly to verify case information, but instead secretly created an email account and programmed it to automatically deliver the threatening message the following morning.
Authorities believe Mittal orchestrated this plan to frame fellow inmate Anandeshwar Agrahari, who has been imprisoned since December 2023 on murder charges, due to personal animosity between the two.
Arrested by a special task force in 2017, Mittal already faces 324 criminal cases related to his alleged Rs 3,700 crore fraud scheme. His wife Ayushi and father Sunil Mittal are co-defendants in the case and remain in judicial custody.
