Officials conducted an exhumation of the infant's body this week to perform a post-mortem examination.
Authorities in Tamil Nadu have arrested a woman and her lesbian partner on charges of murdering the woman's six-month-old baby. The arrests came after the child's father raised suspicions that the infant's death was not natural as initially reported.
The incident occurred in Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu, where the infant was initially thought to have died while nursing earlier this month. Police had registered the case as an unnatural death at that time but did not conduct a post-mortem examination. The family subsequently buried the child on their agricultural property.
Several days later, the infant's father contacted authorities with new information. He reported discovering messages, photographs, and videos revealing a relationship between his wife and another woman. The father expressed concern that his child might have been harmed due to complications arising from this relationship.
Following these allegations, officials exhumed the infant's remains for forensic examination. The post-mortem revealed that the baby had been smothered and strangled.
During questioning, the mother confessed to investigators that she did not want her husband's child. She also claimed that her husband had neglected her care and support.
A high-ranking police official previously informed NDTV that legal proceedings would follow if the investigation confirmed the baby was murdered.
