"The Thar is not just a vehicle, it's a statement that reflects one's personality," stated Singh.
If you own a Thar, you're making a bold statement and might be considered crazy - at least according to Haryana's Director General of Police.
During a press interaction on Saturday, Haryana's top police official OP Singh was discussing vehicle checking protocols and emphasized that officers must maintain politeness during these procedures.
With a smile forming on his face, he explained that while they don't stop every vehicle for inspection, they couldn't possibly allow a Thar to pass unchecked.
"How can we possibly let a Thar go? Or a Bullet motorcycle for that matter... these two vehicles are frequently used by troublemakers. Your choice of vehicle reflects your mentality. Thar drivers are known to perform dangerous stunts on public roads. An assistant commissioner's son recently ran someone over while driving a Thar. The father wants his son released, but we questioned him about the vehicle registration, which is in his name, making him responsible as the problematic element," Singh explained in Hindi.
Addressing a fellow officer, he continued: "If we compiled a list of police personnel, how many would own a Thar? And whoever does must have something wrong with their mind. It's a statement. The Thar isn't just a car, it's a declaration saying 'this is my identity'. Well then, face the consequences. You can't engage in reckless behavior and then expect to avoid accountability."
The Haryana DGP's comments, though seemingly made partly in jest, likely stem from increasing incidents involving Thars being used irresponsibly - including cases of people sitting atop moving vehicles, students falling off while attempting stunts, vehicles crashing into electricity poles while passengers stood on sideboards, and even individuals urinating from moving Thars.
Numerous cases of Thars being driven recklessly and involved in deadly accidents have also been documented.
